Dead Man is independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s sixth feature film, released in 1995 by Miramax Films. It is a film about death and its meaning for humans; or, maybe, rather a description of the human condition, and reflections on the real meaning of life and death. Somehow Dead Man could be seen as a novel Pilgrim’s Progress, trying to strip life of its added meanings, in the light of the concept of death.

JAUME BALAGUERO & PACO PLAZA, 2007
[Rec] is a fly-on-the-wall, cinema verite style mockumentary, shot with a shaky camera effect, from the first person's point of view; the soundtrack does not include any music.
Beginning with the pretense of shooting a TV piece on the way fire fighters live and work in the fire station, reporter Angela, and her cameraman Pablo show us the story of a vicious infectious disease, which transforms people into rabid animal fiends, and the way those infected are quarantined, together with the…

KEN LOACH, 1995
Land and Freedom is a British drama, directed by the English left-wing director Ken Loach, with a script written by playwright Jim Allen. His and Ken Loach’s Marxist, Trotskyist, and anti-Stalinist orientations are evidently present in the film, although it is arguably the theme of Stalinist repression of anti-franquist communist and anarchist militias in Spain during the Civil War, to be mainly portrayed. In the end, given the several disputes and scuffles between the various anti-Franco factions, we wonder, with the director: what is the point to all this?
The story develops through flashbacks, and it recounts of a David Carr, a British unemployed member of the Communist Party from...

CHRIS MARKER, 1962
A short science fiction movie about time travel, the third world war, atomic explosions, and a post-atomic society of survivors, living in sewers infested with rats, desperately trying to return to civilization, seeking help from future. Yet for the main character, haunted by a recurring dream of an airport scene, a woman and a little kid, this soon assumes a secondary significance. He is motivated by his yearning for…

ANDREW LEMAN, 2005
The Call of Cthulhu is a rather faithful representation of the infamous Lovecraft story, although, compared to the literary work, a few trivial changes can be noticed. It has been produced by the HP Lovecraft Historical Society (HPLHS), whose activities concern everything related to Lovecraft, mainly the associated live-action role playing game called Cthulhu Lives, but also include the production of films and music, and even the organization of dedicated...

KEVIN SMITH, 1994
Clerks is Kevin Smith’s first feature film and, in my opinion, his best so far. With this movie, he inaugurates the so-called View-Askew universe, whose places and characters will be present in many of his later movies. View Askew is the production house behind most of his following flicks, and it is formed by none other than Smith himself, and Scott Mosier, who we see in Clerks appearing as Snowball.
At the time of shooting, Smith used to actually work at the convenience store in Leonardo, New Jersey depicted in the film. He worked at Quick Stop during the day, and filmed Clerks at...

DAVID LYNCH, 1976
Eraserhead is David Lynch’s first feature film. It was completed on a mere $20,000 budget, coming from an initial $10,000 grant from the college where he was studying, and loans he collected over the years from friends, when the grant money was over. This is why it took Lynch six years to complete production. It’s the story of a few days in the life of Henry Spencer, a printer on vacation, and his relation with his estranged...

DARIO ARGENTO, 1987
Italian horror master Argento’s Opera is loosely based on The Phantom of the Opera. It’s set in the ‘Teatro Regio’ in Parma, Italy, during the performance of Verdi’s Macbeth. The opera is known to bring bad luck and the production of the film was indeed plagued by misfortunes, such as the death of Argento’s father, while he was filming. The director returns here to the ‘giallo’ genre, after his so called ‘supernatural years’, during...
